It’s just into the find yourself so it actually starts to falter, nevertheless the smack-upwards finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you will smartly dialogued, it’ll have no higher issue into the way of life down the incredibly ugly title.” [ 8 ]

This new film’s publisher and director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) has worked at gambling establishment and you may dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding like and you may possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photo (together with their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a hidden vintage of the category.” [ ten ]

Cobb, as the a police inspector, along with up the get . Even though the patch employs a common pattern, the new characterizations are new and activities suitable so you can overbalance. Dialogue are terse and topical, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touch. Strange digital camera bases arrive on occasion so you’re able to intensify desire and you will momentarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling because the movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, original copywriter and you can affiliate music producer, plus aids in making it a soft production.” [ eleven ]

Its primarily a matter of viewing Mr. Powell experience their paces fashionably if you’re a big shed away from actors and you can performers promote him vintage help. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing lady who brings forth the brand new finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the easy and you will slinky vixen just who will get your into jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb does another type of ready tour while the a tired cops inspector who in the long run shuts the case. Many ingesting and you may puffing is done because of the all of the concerned.” [ 12 ]
